Depeche Mode “Spirit”

Umpteenth album from the ex-Basildon boys. After three Ben Hillier produced albums, the change of producer to James Ford (of Simian Mobile Disco fame) was welcome. Unfortunately, Spirit isn’t blessed with a particularly strong suite of songs. There is a distinct lack of depth, with the whiff that these new (largely mid-tempo) songs are built for playing live. It’s all a bit route one. And very metallic sounding. “Where’s the Revolution” and “Cover Me” are probably the picks. 5/10
